Writing with Whitman: Poetry Writing Workshop with Poet Pramila Venkateswaran

Author of the poetry collection Trace, Draw Me Inmost and Behind Dark Waters, Ms. Venkateswaran teaches English and Women's Studies at Nassau Community College. She reads her poetry internationally, most recently at the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival.
Participants will write new poems at this upbeat and friendly workshop and receive useful suggestions for both revisions and performance. The workshop is for poets at all levels including those who are new to the form.
Fee for the workshop includes admission to the 6:15 PM "Meet the Poets" reception and the 7 PM poetry reading, Walking with Whitman: Poetry in Performance, featuring Pramila Venkateswaran and acclaimed poet Cornelius Eady.
Writing with Whitman is the companion series to Walking with Whitman: Poetry in Performance, a reading series featuring performances by some of the most intriguing figures in contemporary literature on the national scene, paired with respected voices on the regional scene. The series is hosted by Walt Whitman Birthplace Writer-in-Residence George Wallace.

|2015 Long Island Poet of the Year Nominations|
The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association is seeking nominations for the 2015 Long Island Poet of the Year award. This award is given annually to a Long Island poet recognized regionally for the excellence of his or her work and who is active in supporting and promoting poetry on Long Island.
The nomination should consist of a brief bio/CV, including publications, artistic engagements, and community activities, and a two page sample of the poet's work. This material should be submitted by email attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org, or by mail to Executive Director, Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, 246 Old Walt Whitman Road, West Hills, New York 11746-4148
Nominations must be received by January 15, 2015. The WWBA Board of Trustees Program Committee will choose the awardee by January 31, 2015. The award will be presented at a reception-reading in April 2015.
