Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center
LI Super Poem Sunday
Please join the Long Island Poetry Collective for
Super Poem Sunday on February 7th, 2010!!!
Before going off to the same old boring Super Bowl party, join the LIPC at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center from high noon until 4 p.m. to take part in our own spin on championship!
This year’s theme for SPS II is “the sport of poetry.” This is a fun event geared toward those of all ages who may want to celebrate the idea of competition, but have an alternative to watching football. However, the event will end early enough so that all who wish should be able to attend any other Super Bowl party they may be attending.
There will be raffles, including a 50/50 raffle and monetary prize to the best original slam performance! Heroes and drinks will also be provided to those in attendance to keep the ‘Super Bowl’ feeling alive for the event. The audience will also have a chance to be involved as judges, or cheer with the LIPC Cheerleaders at the half time show!
The afternoon will start with an open mic for all poets in attendance, whether competing or not, will have a five minute opportunity to “warm up” the audience as a “Calibration Poet” by reading at an open mic. Contestants will then be allowed three minutes during the slam to perform works from others or their own if they so choose. The idea is to evoke the idea of a poetry “slam” without the confines of all the rules.
This is a great way to enjoy the atmosphere of Super Bowl Sunday! At this event, there will be no lopsided, blow-out scores or off-color commercials, no relentless time-outs, or boring commentary - only getting together with people who get bored by that stuff, but love language! Our SPS cheerleaders will return during our half-time show with all new cheers.
Who will be the next Johnny Unitas? The next MVP? Join us and find out – it could be you!
There will be a $10 donation requested to join us, which includes the food and beverages.
Please join us on Sunday, February 7th, 2010, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center, located at 246 Old Walt Whitman Road, West Hills, NY 11746-4148. For directions, please contact the Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site at
