“Secondary Education Experience”
A morning at the Walt Whitman Birthplace
Grades 9 – 12
Students tour the Walt Whitman Birthplace, c. 1819, take an in-depth look at the historic material, culture, and architecture of the period. Students are introduced to a published poet and reflect on Whitman’s poetry and discover how to write their own free verse.
Using poems of Walt Whitman and other poets, students learn how to express the sights and sounds around them as well as their feelings. Students create group poems, learn how to use descriptive words, and write individual poems. Poems are shared aloud.
