Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) presents the 12th season of Poetry in Performance: Walking With Whitman, hosted by Writer-in-Residence George Wallace. The signature series continues to bring the most intriguing figures in contemporary literature on the national scene paired with local poets on the Walt Whitman Stage.
This season kicks off with Florida-based poets Denise Duhamel and Vicki Iorio along with local musician Josie Bello.

Denise Duhamel, NEA winner and Guggenheim fellow, is a highly popular and well respected poet who was born in Rhode Island, studied at Sarah Lawrence College and lives in Hollywood, Florida. She is the author of numerous collections with University of Pittsburgh Press, the most recent of which are Second Story, Scald, and Blowout (a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award). In response to her collection Smile!, Edward Field says ‘More than any poet I know Denise Duhamel, for all the witty, polished surface of her poems, communicates the ache of human existence.” Duhamel served as a guest editor of The Best American Poetry 2013, and teaches creative writing and literature at Florida International University.
Vicki Iorio is the author of Poems from the Dirty Couch, Send me a Letter, and Something Fishy. A long term fixture on the LI poetry writing scene, her work can be read in Hell Strung and Crooked, I Let Go of the Stars (Great Weather for Media), The Brownstone Poets Anthology, Painted Bridge Quarterly, Poetrybay, New York Times, and Misfit Magazine. While she currently lives in Florida, her heart is in New York.
Josie Bello is a Singer-Songwriter from Huntington. Her songs tell stories that are relatable, and explore issues that are both timely and timeless. Her latest album “Resilience” was released Feb 2, 2022. Along with her prior two albums, “Have Purpose Live Long” (2020) and her debut album “Can’t Go Home” (2018), “Resilience” has had extensive U.S. & International radio play and have appeared on radio charts both here and in Europe. Josie performs solo and with her band, “The Kit House Band”. Her music is available everywhere including Spotify, Pandora and Apple Music.
