Art in the Barn Summer Sessions

Art in the Barn is a back for the summer at Walt Whitman Birthplace. Taught by Lena Massari Sawyer, former Museum Educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Come and join us every other Saturday for a fun craft and to learn about different artists!

Ages: Pre-school to 3rd Grade

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR ALL CLASSES 
$40 per child & parent/caregiver, second child $20
Walk-ins $50, second child $25, if space available

July 13, 2024: The circus has come to the Art Barn at Walt Whitman Birthplace. Create your own circus, painting as you learn about 19thand 20th century artists Seurat, Toulouse Lautrec, Marc Chagall and Picasso, who were all fascinated by the circus. Class will end on the great lawn with turn of the century children’s toys. 

July 27, 2024: Food, food, food! Throughout the centuries artists have been inspired to create works of art based on food, join us as we learn about giant hamburgers by Claes Oldenburg, Hot dogs by Roy Lichtenstein and soup cans by Any Warhol! Class will end with your own creation, pizza made from clay! 

August 10, 2024: Summer is in full bloom, come to the Art Barn and paint your own bird house. Birdhouse and seed will be provided.

August 31, 2024: Pharaohs, Queens and Mummies!  Did you know that Walt Whitman was influenced by Ancient Egyptian mythology?  Learn how to write your name with ancient hieroglyphics and try on a Pharaoh’s crown!
